Chapter 8

Gary profusely thanked Hank for his kindness as he dropped them off in the middle of Nashville, but the sun was setting quickly, so they needed to find Gary some pants and get checked into the hotel fast.

“Don’t you have some other pants in your duffel bag?” Piper asked.

“Well, I do,” Gary said with a cringe. “But one is covered in puke, and the other is smeared with tree sap, neither of which will get me through tomorrow.”

Piper nodded. “Valid points. Let’s go shopping. Hank said this mall supposedly has every store you could possibly want,” she said, looking down at her phone. “Let’s get in, get out, and get a room!” As she tucked her phone into her back pocket, Gary noticed her cheeks fading pink. “You know what I meant.”

He chuckled, admiring how pretty she looked in that color, but tried to keep pace beside her. They maneuvered the crowds, but they managed to stay together as they pushed through toward the mall.

Every so often, as their two hands hung between them in their hustle, Gary’s knuckles would brush against Piper’s fingers. It continuously captured his attention, and left him wondering if she would find it odd for him to take her hand. It would be a simple means to keep from getting lost in the crowd of shoppers. It was the first thing that came to mind, seeing her fingers just inches from his. It was the initial response, like their few days traveling together had been months or years and made them easy friends, instead of mere strangers just days before. Gary willed his fingers to move, to reach for and hold her hand, but she suddenly stopped short, bringing his gaze up.

“Wow, look at that.” As they rounded a corner, they walked straight across a crowd waiting around an enormous and exquisitely decorated Christmas tree, lined by food trucks and outdoor shops on either side.

“I guess they don’t do things small in Nashville,” Piper said.

In front of the tree, there was a propped up stage, and a man in a Santa costume suddenly appeared, and the crowd cheered. But as Gary looked closer, it wasn’t just a Santa. It was an Elvis Santa. Big hair, shades, and an Elvis cape, but the coat and pants were red with white fluff. It was quite a sight.

“I’m thoroughly confused right now,” Gary whispered.

The man on stage started singing “Blue Christmas” and the crowd around the stage joined in. Even Piper by Gary’s side started swaying and singing along.

“You’re into this?” Gary asked, raising an eyebrow.

Piper laughed. “My mom loves Elvis. I’ll have to bring her sometime, she’d love this.”

Then she pulled out her phone and started snapping photos. The impersonator finished off the song with the signature rubber legs move, making Gary roll his eyes.

“Hey there, little mama.” Suddenly the eyes in the crowd turned to Piper as Elvis Santa grew near. “You seem to know all the words to this song, so why don’t you
